French-Israeli Conductor
Aviva Einhorn, an award-winning French-Israeli musician and conductor, holds the distinction of being the first woman to conduct orchestras in Israel.
Born in Antwerp, Belgium, on May 21, 1929, Einhorn demonstrated remarkable talent on the piano from the age of four and a half. However, her musical education was interrupted by the turmoil of World War II. After the war, her family settled in Paris, where she resumed her studies.
In 1946, the family immigrated to Israel, and Einhorn continued her musical training. She studied piano under Eliyahu Rudiakov and Professor Leo Kastenberg, and composition and conducting with the renowned Paul Ben-Haim. On Ben-Haim’s recommendation, she moved to Paris in 1950 to attend the prestigious Paris Conservatory, where she studied conducting for six years.
Einhorn’s talent earned her numerous accolades. In 1956, she won first prize at an international competition for young conductors in Besançon, France. Despite her success, some judges hesitated to recognize women in conducting, expressing skepticism about their ability to sustain careers in the field once they started families.
In Italy, Einhorn received a scholarship and triumphed with the Philharmonic Orchestra of Florence. She furthered her studies at Tanglewood in the United States, where she conducted Mozart’s opera Zaida. Upon returning to France, she conducted the Monte Carlo Radio Orchestra.
Einhorn led and won acclaim for her concerts in Italy, the Netherlands, and Yugoslavia, often overcoming resistance from concert organizers unaccustomed to seeing a woman on the conductor’s podium. Her career faced significant challenges due to prevailing societal attitudes toward women pursuing careers in male-dominated professions.
In Israel, Einhorn faced obstacles in advancing her career as a conductor. Despite her international successes, opportunities at home were scarce. She was invited to conduct the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra and the Voice of Israel Orchestra only sporadically and typically after establishing her reputation abroad.
Aviva Einhorn’s perseverance and achievements stand as a testament to her exceptional talent and determination in the face of systemic challenges.
