Russian Conductor 

Veronika Dudarova was a prominent Soviet and Russian conductor. She began her musical journey at the age of six, studying piano at the Children’s Music School for Gifted Children at the Baku Academy of Music. From 1933 to 1937, she pursued further studies in the piano department of the Leningrad Conservatory under Pavel Serebryakov.

Dudarova’s conducting career began in 1944 when she became a conductor at the Russian Academic Youth Theater. The following year, she worked as an assistant conductor at the Opera Studio of the Moscow Conservatory. In 1947, she joined the Moscow Regional Philharmonic Orchestra as the second conductor, where she initially led performances in small towns across the Moscow region.

From 1947 to 1960, Dudarova served as a junior conductor with the Moscow State Academic Symphony Orchestra. In 1960, she assumed the position of chief conductor and artistic director of the orchestra, a role she held for nearly three decades, until 1989.

Under her leadership, the Moscow State Symphony Orchestra gained international recognition. In November 1972, the orchestra, under Dudarova’s baton, embarked on its first foreign tour to Poland, performing nine concerts, including one in Warsaw, to great critical acclaim. The year 1977 marked a high point for the orchestra, as Dudarova introduced 50 new programs into its repertoire. Her contributions to Soviet music were recognized on August 10, 1977, when she was awarded the title of People’s Artist of the USSR.

In 1991, Dudarova became the principal conductor of the Symphony Orchestra of Russia, a position she held until 2003. She continued as the orchestra’s artistic manager until her death in Moscow in January 2009.
