American Conductor 

Sarah Caldwell was born in Maryville, Missouri, and raised in Fayetteville, Arkansas. A child prodigy, she began performing publicly on the violin by the age of ten. She graduated from Fayetteville High School at just 14 and went on to earn a degree from Hendrix College in 1944. Caldwell also studied at the University of Arkansas and the New England Conservatory of Music.

In 1952, Caldwell moved to Boston, Massachusetts, where she became head of the Boston University opera workshop. Five years later, in 1957, she founded the Boston Opera Group with an initial budget of $5,000. This ensemble eventually evolved into the Opera Company of Boston, renowned for its ambitious productions of challenging operatic works and innovative adaptations of classic operas.

During the 1980s, Caldwell extended her influence through Opera New England, a touring branch of the Opera Company of Boston, which brought opera to audiences across the New England states.

In 1974, she became the second woman to conduct the New York Philharmonic, leading a program exclusively featuring works by female composers, including Ruth Crawford Seeger, Lili Boulanger, and Thea Musgrave. On January 13, 1976, Caldwell made history as the first female conductor at the Metropolitan Opera, conducting La Traviata with Beverly Sills in the title role. She later returned to the Met in 1978 to conduct L’elisir d’amore with José Carreras and Judith Blegen.

Caldwell also appeared as a guest conductor with prestigious ensembles such as the New York Philharmonic, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, and the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

Her achievements earned her numerous honors, including a Doctor of Fine Arts degree from Bates College in 1975, the National Medal of Arts in 1997, and induction into the Arkansas Entertainers Hall of Fame.
